Irving Kristol once described a neoconservative as “a liberal who has been mugged by reality,” which is often simplified to, “A conservative is a liberal who was mugged.”
Liberals, pray Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is an exception to Kristol’s dictum.
The 73-year-old justice (pictured) was robbed last week at his vacation home in the West Indies by a man wielding a machete, a court spokeswoman said Monday.
Breyer’s wife, Dr. Joanna Breyer, and guests were also present at the justice’s home on the Caribbean island of Nevis when the intruder broke in, the spokeswoman said.
The intruder made off with $ 1,000, the spokeswoman said. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
The Feb. 9 robbery was reported to the authorities, the spokeswoman said, adding that she didn’t know whether an arrest had been made.
The Supreme Court is on winter break but will reconvene on Friday for a closed-door conference.
